Data Services Engineer (in Germany)

EUMETSAT is evolving its data services towards a “data-centric” approach using cloud data technologies to deliver Earth Observation (EO) Data as a Service (DaaS). A key objective is to enable flexible and scalable data transformation capabilities that support the Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) of EUMETSAT data to meet a wide variety of user needs.
These include on-demand data preparation, provisioning of workflows for distributed processing environments and enabling downstream exploitation of EUMETSAT data including AI/ML applications. The transformation workflows have to be efficient, flexible and scalable to address the intensive computation needs required by users to prepare data for exploitation.
Within the Big Data Services Competence Area (BDS CA) of the Digital Solutions and SAF Division, the Data Service Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance and evolution of EUMETSAT’s data transformation and preparation services, working in close collaboration with industrial partners and internal stakeholders. This role plays a key part in delivering on EUMETSAT’s vision for modernised data services lowering the barrier to data exploitation through scalable and interoperable ETL capabilities.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead the definition, design and evolution roadmap for data transformation and ETL services, in line with EUMETSAT’s digital strategy and user needs.
- Manage industrial activities for the development, implementation and maintenance of ETL and data transformation services.
- Collaborate with other teams across the organisation to ensure achievement of the defined SLAs and the seamless integration with other existing EUMETSAT Data services including the EUMETSAT Data Lake (EDL).
- Maintain awareness of evolving technologies, standards, and user requirements in the area of data transformation, preparation and provisioning.
- Provide technical guidance within the Big Data Services Competence Area to foster best practices and architectural coherence.
- Support EUMETSAT in relevant forums and working groups promoting standardisation and interoperability (e.g., CEOS, WMO, OGC).
- Ensure complete and up-to-date technical documentation in accordance with EUMETSAT quality management processes.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- A university degree in a relevant subject such as Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Geoinformatics or another technical or scientific field.
Skills and Experience:
- Proficiency in designing and evolving data services, with knowledge of large-scale data workflows and data-centric architectures.
- Experience with modern, scalable cloud data processing technologies, including containerized deployment, and CI/CD and DevOps practices.
- Experience with cloud-ready data formats and relevant metadata conventions.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate, coordinate and facilitate effectively. This included engagement with industry, end-users, and internal teams.
- Strong writing and presentations skills to various levels and audiences
- Demonstrated knowledge in standardisation and interoperability, with awareness of relevant international initiatives and emerging best practices.
- An understanding of data preparation techniques (e.g, reformatting, resampling) and experience supporting AI/ML readiness workflows are desirable.
- Familiarity with agile or iterative methodologies is advantageous.
Languages:
- Candidates must be able to work effectively in English.

Eumetsat - monitoring weather and climate from space
EUMETSAT’s role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
