Orion is a globally operating Finnish pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, and markets human and veterinary pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients. The company is continuously developing new drugs and treatment methods. The core therapy areas of Orion's pharmaceutical R&D are oncology and pain.

As a pharmaceutical company, Orion's business is highly regulated, which shows throughout the processes and practices. Orion wanted to invest in long-term scalability and business continuity and started looking for a modern integration platform with a reliable partner for maintaining it.

Low-code Frends iPaaS made an impression due to its modularity, flexibility, and cost-efficiency. In addition, the hybrid nature of the Frends platform suited on-premise and cloud use.

Integration challenges

Integrations play a significant role in Orion's everyday operations, ensuring the reliable flow of goods and overall efficiency.

"Reliable data and integrations are vital to us as any errors would immediately affect the flow of goods. Our brand has a long history and high reputation, which we cannot afford to risk," says Anssi Pitkänen, Orion's Information Security Manager.

Low-code Frends iPaaS was appealing to Orion as it allows building integrations in-house. At the same time, Orion wanted to have a partner with enough resources to provide support.

"Being able to pull off simple integrations ourselves creates significant value. However, with more demanding business processes, we can count on the deep expertise of Frends, which helps tremendously in resource planning," assesses Pitkänen.

Results

Orion started using Frends iPaaS at the beginning of 2021. As a result, approximately 200 integrations were transferred to Frends from the previous integration platform. Frends provides a smart and secure approach to integrations.

"We utilize Frends iPaaS whenever it's possible. It is a central piece of our enterprise architecture, which helps us independently streamline and automate processes and increase the efficiency of operations," says Pitkänen.

Orion appreciates the pleasant cooperation with Frends, which has helped Orion scale up its business and strengthen continuity. The maintenance service ensures that all processes run smoothly even during holiday times and diminishes business risks proactively.
