Data platform – how to get the best out of your business data

BloggausBetween old legacy systems and shiny new objects of data-driven services, data platforms offer a coherent way to gain the maximum benefits of your business data.

Data platforms are solutions to collect, process, and utilize data effectively in a business-friendly way. They also offer a path to reconsider the organisational culture and teamwork in utilising the data beyond silos. To understand their core value, it is essential to recognise the differences between data platforms, old legacy data, and new data-driven services.

Data platforms are solutions to collect, process, and utilize data effectively in a business-friendly way.

There are obvious reasons to use legacy systems, as they have been dominating the data collection field for years. However, time is not on legacy data’s side: the common problem is that legacy systems are difficult to access and process, so data gets easily trapped in one system. Aging legacy systems are quickly ballooned with cumulative data and keeping up with the 20’s requirements of utilising business data becomes a challenge. Also, the management of legacy data is usually highly centralised and complicated behind few operators.

The desire to use modern technologies in the data management of an organisation can become compelling, and this may override the need to construct new data systems patiently and comprehensively. The main challenge for data-driven services is that instead of one controlled data system, the data is fragmented in multiple project silos. The maintenance of varying data architectures is likely to be costly and complicated, and thus the supposedly agile way of data management is backfired.

The quality of data matters the most – data platforms offer solutions to use business data at their best

It's often easier to focus on the amount the data, but its quality makes it value in business cases. High-quality data is trusted and understandable, and it is also clear, accurate, and consistent between different technologies.

Old legacy systems and fragmented data-driven services do not offer the most effective ways to improve data quality. When data is rigid, it has no value to business development measurement, causing the digital load of business data to become heavier each time the system has to be processed or remoulded.

Data platform

Data platforms enable faster steps of utilising data for the needs of businesses as the data is not trapped behind one system or fragmented in complicated silos. Data platforms grant a consistent view of data from different sources; they help improve data governance throughout the organisation and deliver data to relevant users. For example, more qualified data can be used to improve customer experiences on different online platforms.

For example, data platforms allow one to

  • Collect, visualise, govern, and develop business data more easily
  • Get a better handle on customer data, which helps create more value for customers more efficiently. This can be used, for instance, to launch, scale, and develop new products and services easier.
  • Improve organisational effectiveness on handling and utilising data
  • Come up with better data-based decisions faster as the process is backed up with cohesive and qualified data

Data does not work without people – data platforms can assist teamwork across organisations

The use of data platforms cannot be considered only a technology issue but also a way to improve organisational culture and teamwork.

At their best, data platforms bring different teams and departments away from silos to work together across the organisation, and thus create a more cohesive way to utilise data across the board.

To get the best knowledge of data, the language which is used to speak about data should be common in the whole organisation. Otherwise, the qualified data is in danger to get underused. Thus, it is crucial to develop an understanding of the data usage in the whole organisation.

The “coercion” to handle data with a common language can bring unexpected benefits to teamwork. When data platforms are understood as a mutual benefit in the entire organisation, they help create more dialogue between the teams.

The common ground for understanding the purpose of data platforms is important. In Cybercom, we offer our clients not only understanding of data and technology, but also the grasp of organisations that are made of teams and people. And that’s why we support our customers to use the data in the best way at the organisational level.
